One of the many excellent films showing at the New York Surf Film Festival this year is a film called Somewhere Near Tapachula, and just aired today (September 26, 2010). I was super stoked to find that a drawing that I drew last year had also made it into a few posts written about the film… Read on to find out more about this amazing group of people building up a vibrant surf community in Mexico.
“Somewhere Near Tapachula, by Jonno Durrant and Stefan Hunt: 54 Mexican kids, 37 surfboards, 2 Australian parents, 1 inspiring surf story! Pam and Alan Skuse left their family and their comfortable lives in Australia to volunteer at a Mexican orphanage for one year. They accidentally founded Mission Mexico and are still there ten years later. Five years ago they started teaching children to surf in the deserted world-class local waves. Now the kids rip and the joy of the sport helps them heal from their unimaginable pasts.” via NYSFF.com

This week in inspiration is a little random… We have a really complete article on Jquery best practices from TVI Design. For those who don’t know jQuery is a very popular javascript framework, very lightweight and feature-rich. You will only like this if you are a little nerdy of course… So in news for other kinds of people…
Video of one of the most genius DIY recreations I’ve seen in a long time, from Volpin Props in Atlanta. Who was also kind enough to share tips on how he achieved his final product. The detail in this is amazing, and he goes into everything from building circuitry to getting parts cast, chromed, and molded.
I thought I’d also share a link to Rebel 8, interjet home of Cali-Creative Mike Giant, and purveyor of fine and stylish goods. People bite this style like there is no tomorrow, but none compare. Giant is a technician.
And speaking of things California, a friend of mine is traveling to Long Beach in August and it got me to thinking. Having been born there (full disclosure, I didn’t actually grow up there, mostly spent summers there visiting family), I felt the need to share what little I know about spending quality time in the LBC.
What’s missing on this list? Locals have got to know more about the city than me, and I know that LA has a lot to offer too… Holla at me, or comment on this post, I’d love to learn more about the city I’m from!

Its been a crazy year so far… and honestly it’s hard to keep up with the web, AND be doing all the design and creative stuff I can possible do at the same time. So this is the first of what will be a series on weekly inspiration, the best of what I’ve stumbled onto whilst perusing the intertubes.
A super well done short from tinyinventions.com featuring some superb Aftereffects work mixed with even awesomer stop-motion DIY animation. The talented Audrey Kawasaki shares some rare process pics. And KAWS latest in an article from WFDJ as well as a link to his recent show at the Adlrich in NYC. Plus, who doesn’t need a little print and color management primer from time to time…
